Freedom fighter and veteran Communist leader Bevinje Vishnu Kakkilaya died of brain haemorrhage at a private hospital here in the early hours of Monday. He was 93. He is survived by four sons.
He was a member of the Rajya Sabha for two years representing the Madras Province and an MLA in the Karnataka Assembly for two terms. Mr. Kakkilaya led many agitations against injustice to farmers and labourers and played a key role in building the Communist Party of India and its students' wing, the All-India Students' Federation in the State. He was the secretary of the Karnataka State committee of the CPI.
Mr. Kakkilaya was in the forefront of the Karnataka unification movement having served as general secretary of the Akhanda Karnataka Rajya Nirmana Parishat.
He is also credited to have played a major role in the formulation of the land reforms legislation during the regime of D. Devaraj Urs. Mr. Kakkilaya headed an advisory committee set up by Mr. Urs on land reforms.
He led a 50-member team to help liberation of Goa where he faced the brutality of the Portuguese police.
Mr. Kakkilaya was jailed twice — first during the Quit India movement in 1942 and later in 1946.
After Independence, he went underground when his party was banned in 1948 but was arrested in 1950 in Davangere.
He worked as editor of the party mouthpiece Kembavuta weekly from 1986 to 1991. He contributed articles to it until recently – the latest piece being on the 60 years of Indian Parliament.
According to his long-time associate P.K. Krishnappa, Mr. Kakkilaya had walked out of a wealthy family in Bevinje in Kasaragod district in Kerala to join politics.
When he was felicitated in Bangalore after he turned 90, Mr. Kakkilaya had said: “Earlier, our battle was against feudalism and imperialism. But now, the challenges are more. Imperialism has changed its colours.”

Mangalore: Freedom-fighter, former MP and MLA, doyen of Karnataka unification movement and CPI and AITUC leader B V Kakkillaya passed away in a private hospital in the early hours of Monday, June 4.
He had been hospitalized following illness, which had led to a slight brain haemorrhage. His end is said to have come around 2 am.
He had been elected to the Rajya Sabha from the Madras assembly between 1952-54 and had later won from Bantwal and Vittal constituencies of the Mysore (later Karnataka) assembly in 1972 and 1978. As early as during 1940s, he had rallied the farmers and workers of the undivided South Kanara district - which then included Kasaragod district. He had taken part in the Quit India and was one of the few surviving freedom fighters from the district.
On behalf of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, the Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association and the Karnataka Federation of Rationalist Associations, Dr Narendra Nayak has condoled the sad demise of B V Kakkilaya, a veteran of the trade union and communist movement in India.
He was committed to his convictions right upto his last days. He had strongly supported the Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association in its early days and was a beacon to those who wanted to observe a life devoid of superstitious beliefs.
Dr Nayak has expressed the hope that the younger generation follows his principles and the principled stands that he had taken all his life.
